Frequently Asked Questions

HOW CAN I CHOOSE THE RIGHT THERAPIST?

It is very important for you to select a therapist whose approach and personality will fit your needs. Examine the quality of service he/she provides (professionalism, honesty, qualification) as well as your feelings the sessions bring about. Do you think that the therapist cares, respects your privacy, and capable? Do you feel comfortable working with this person? If you are not completely satisfied, talk with your therapist about your concerns and see if it changes anything.

SHOULD I SEE A PSYCHIATRIST OR THERAPIST?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who received special training in treating psychiatric illnesses. They are able to prescribe medications, and to diagnose not only psychiatric conditions but also medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. However, they typically don't provide psychotherapy. Medication is often effective in treating symptoms of mental illnesses, but medication alone may not  provide a long-term solution to mental health issues.

A therapist is a qualified mental health professional that meet the professional standards set forth by their professional board. A therapist is unable to prescribe medications but offers "Talk therapy". Therapy addresses the cause of client's distress and unhealthy / unhelpful behavior patterns.

HOW LONG WILL THE COUNSELING/THERAPY TAKE?

Each case is unique and different. Some cases may only need a couple of sessions whereas others may take much longer. It depends on what your needs and goals are, and how committed you are to the process.
